Sweden is a high-wage Nordic labour market of about 10.6 million people in which collective agreements (kollektivavtal) set pay and conditions for most employees. Industry, technology, life sciences, retail, hospitality and the public sector are the areas most readers will meet. English is widely used in technology and international firms, but Swedish is needed for most jobs, and what you earn depends heavily on the agreement that covers your employer.
This guide covers the economy in numbers, where to search, how pay floors work when there is no statutory minimum wage, work and residence permits for EU/EEA and non-EU applicants, labour law, public holidays, social security, income tax and what Swedish employers expect in a CV. For other markets, see our guides to job boards in Switzerland, Belgium and France.
Editorial boundary: This is practical job-search guidance, not legal, immigration or tax advice. We only list figures we could read in an official or primary source, and we mark those that come from press reports or a secondary summary as "reported" or "likely". Confirm details with Arbetsförmedlingen (the Swedish Public Employment Service), Migrationsverket (the Migration Agency), Skatteverket (the Tax Agency), SCB (Statistics Sweden), Försäkringskassan (the Social Insurance Agency), Pensionsmyndigheten (the Pensions Agency), the Riksbank, the law texts on riksdagen.se, the collective-agreement tables of the parties or your employer before you sign.

World Bank unemployment (modelled, 2025) is 8.7%, and youth unemployment (ages 15 to 24) is 24.3%. The World Bank also lists an international migrant stock of 2,272,158 people in 2024 and personal remittances received at 0.8% of GDP in 2025. The national figures below are more recent.
| Measure | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Unemployment, September 2026, seasonally adjusted and smoothed | 8.7% (youth 15 to 24: 23.2%) | SCB labour force survey[^2] |
| Employment rate, September 2026, seasonally adjusted | 69.6% | SCB[^2] |
| Unemployment, foreign-born vs Swedish-born, Q2 2026, ages 20 to 66 | 13.6% vs 5.0% | SCB[^3] |
| Registered with Arbetsförmedlingen, September 2026 | 6.4% of the register-based labour force (reported) | Arbetsförmedlingen release[^4] |
| Population, 31 December 2025 | 10,605,529; foreign-born 2,210,638 (20.8%) | SCB[^5] |
| Riksbank policy rate | 1.75%, unchanged since 1 October 2025 | Riksbank[^6] |
| SEK per USD / per EUR, 20 October 2026 | 9.92 / 11.12 | Riksbank[^6] |
The labour force survey counts people who are jobless and looking for work, while the register figure counts people registered with Arbetsförmedlingen, so the two rates are not comparable.
What this means for a job seeker: with unemployment at 8.7% and foreign-born unemployment at nearly three times the Swedish-born rate, competition is real even in a rich economy, and language and local references matter. About one in five residents was born abroad, so employers are used to international colleagues. We convert kronor to US dollars at the Riksbank rate of 9.92 on 20 October 2026; the monthly average moved between roughly 9.76 and 9.98 in September and October, so treat dollar figures as approximate.
Sweden job search in one table

| Channel | What it is | Use it for | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platsbanken | Arbetsförmedlingen's national vacancy database | Vacancies across sectors and regions | Ads also appear on EURES; we read no total count[^7] |
| EURES | EU job mobility service; an EURES label marks employers who welcome EU/EEA/Swiss applicants | EEA-wide search | Aimed at EU/EEA mobility[^7] |
| Work in Sweden | Information from the Swedish Institute | Moving and working guidance | An information site, not a job board; the older workinsweden.se address is behind a maintenance login[^8] |
| Migrationsverket | The permit authority | Permit rules and scam warnings | Not a job board[^9] |
| Offentliga Jobb and Region Stockholm jobs | Region and municipal adverts | Public-sector roles | We could not verify who owns Offentliga Jobb, so we do not call it official[^10] |
| LinkedIn and Indeed Sweden | International networks | Alerts and international employers | Indeed sits behind a bot wall that blocked our check; we found no official ranking[^11] |
| JobbSafari | Job site now owned by Duunitori Group; it describes itself as Sweden's largest career site (its own claim) | Cross-checking adverts | Behind a bot wall, so we do not link it[^11] |
| Ledigajobb | Job site, about 65,300 vacancies shown on 21 October 2026 | Broad search | A count of ads, not of distinct jobs[^11] |
| Academic Work | Agency and job board | Graduates and early-career roles | Staffing and recruitment business[^11] |
| JobTeaser | Career platform; Graduateland now redirects here | Students and graduates | Student-oriented[^11] |
| The Hub | Nordic start-up board with a Sweden filter | Start-ups and technology | Sector-specific[^11] |
| Career fairs: ARMADA at KTH, 17 to 18 November 2026; UTNARM in Uppsala, 5 November 2026; CHARM at Chalmers, 9 to 10 February (year not printed on the page) | Student career fairs | Engineering and science graduates | Mainly for students[^12] |
| Employer pages: Volvo Group, Volvo Cars, Ericsson, H&M Group, IKEA, Spotify, Scania, Atlas Copco, Sandvik, ABB, Saab, AstraZeneca, SEB, Handelsbanken, Swedbank, Klarna, Vattenfall | Large employers | Direct applications | Only pages that loaded for us are linked[^13] |
Three names you may still see in older lists are gone or changed. Schibsted announced on 23 October 2024 that Blocket Jobb would close, and its old address no longer works. Monster's European operations were reported wound down in 2025 (we rate this "likely"). The Local no longer runs a jobs board at its old address. Treat the table as a snapshot of 21 October 2026, not a ranking.[^11]
Employers also change. Northvolt AB filed for bankruptcy on 12 March 2025, and Lyten completed the purchase of its Swedish assets and took over staff on 27 February 2026. We do not state a production restart as fact.[^14] As a timing example, Scania's summer-job applications for 2027 in Södertälje were reported to open 12 January to 28 February 2027; check the page.[^13]
What this means for a job seeker: start with Platsbanken and two commercial boards, add EURES if you are an EEA citizen, and apply directly to large employers. Students should note the fair dates above, because several fall within weeks of this update.
Arbetsförmedlingen and public-sector portals
Arbetsförmedlingen does not pay unemployment benefit; the unemployment insurance funds (a-kassor) do, as the standard Swedish system works, and you should confirm this with the fund.[^4] Public-sector vacancies are advertised on regional and municipal sites such as Region Stockholm, and state vacancies appear on Platsbanken and on agency sites. Arbetsgivarverket is the employer organisation for about 250 state employers, not a job board. Its campaign name is "Jobba statligt".[^10]
Recruitment and staffing agencies
Agencies with Swedish sites that load include Manpower, Adecco, Randstad, Lernia, Poolia, StudentConsulting, Hays, Michael Page, Experis and Academic Work.[^15]
- No fees for job seekers. Under 6 § of Lag (1993:440) om privat arbetsförmedling, whoever runs placement may not ask for, agree to or receive payment from job seekers for offering or assigning work. A breach carries a fine or up to six months in prison (7 §).[^16]
- Agency work. Under Lag (2012:854) om uthyrning av arbetstagare, agency workers have equal treatment on basic pay and working terms (6 §), and the agency may not charge the worker (10 §). After more than 24 months within 36 months at the same unit, the client company must offer a permanent job or pay two monthly salaries instead (12 a §, added by SFS 2022:839). A collective agreement may deviate from 12 a §.[^17]
- The staffing agreement. Kompetensföretagen, part of Almega, has agreements with all LO unions, with Unionen and Akademikerförbunden, and with some other unions.[^17]
Pay in 2026: no minimum wage law, but collective-agreement floors

Sweden has no law on a minimum wage; HRF, the Medlingsinstitutet (Mediation Office) and sweden.se say the same.[^18] Pay floors come from collective agreements. In 2025, 88% of employees aged 18 to 68 were covered by one (83% in the private sector, 100% in the public sector, 44% in firms with fewer than 10 employees and 99% in firms with 500 or more), and about 545,000 employees were not covered. Union density was 66% of employees aged 15 to 74.[^19]
The Court of Justice of the EU ruled on 11 November 2025 in case C-19/23 that Article 5(2) of the Adequate Minimum Wages Directive, part of Article 5(1) and the non-decrease rule in Article 5(3) are annulled, while the rest of the directive stands.[^20]
| Agreement (2026) | Monthly minimum (SEK) | USD at 9.92 | Valid from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retail (Svensk Handel and Handels), age 18 | 26,626 | about USD 2,684 | 1 April 2026[^21] |
| Retail, age 19 | 26,946 | about USD 2,716 | 1 April 2026[^21] |
| Retail, after 18, with 3 years' branschvana | 29,156 | about USD 2,939 | 1 April 2026[^21] |
| Hotels and restaurants (Gröna Riksavtalet), group 2, no experience | 26,580 | about USD 2,679 | 1 April 2026[^22] |
| Hotels and restaurants, group 1, no experience | 28,425 | about USD 2,865 | 1 April 2026[^22] |
| Cleaning (Kommunal and Almega Serviceföretagen), likely | 27,001 | about USD 2,722 | 1 September 2026[^23] |
| Caretakers and cleaners (Fastighets), likely | 28,890 (age 20+) | about USD 2,912 | end of agreement 2026[^23] |
The retail agreement runs from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2027, and Gröna Riksavtalet covers the same period; with six years of experience the hotel and restaurant minimums are SEK 28,944 (group 2) and 30,428 (group 1). In retail, minimums for people over 18 rise with branschvana (years in the trade): SEK 27,530 after one year, SEK 27,866 after two and SEK 29,156 after three. Under-20 rates are lower in hotels and restaurants. The official agreement tables for cleaning were not read, so the two cleaning figures rest on press and union reports.[^21][^22][^23]
The industrial agreement (Industriavtalet) runs for 24 months from April 2025 to March 2027 with a total labour-cost increase of 6.4%: 3.4% in April 2025 and 3.0% in April 2026. It is a cost mark, not purely a pay rise.[^24]
Earnings and the permit floor. SCB's median monthly salary is SEK 38,300 (about USD 3,861; women 36,800, men 39,900) and the average is SEK 42,900 (about USD 4,325; women 40,600, men 45,100), both 2025 data updated on 16 June 2026.[^25] Migrationsverket requires non-EU workers to earn at least 90% of the SCB median at the time of application, which is SEK 34,470 a month (about USD 3,475) for decisions from 1 June 2026, and also at least the collective-agreement level. Exempt occupations and groups use 75%, which is about SEK 28,725 by our calculation. People with a permit granted before 1 June who file an extension between 1 June and 1 December 2026 are still measured at 80%, now SEK 30,640 (about USD 3,089); from 2 December 2026 it is 90%.[^26]
Housing. The Stockholm housing queue averaged 9.0 years in 2025 for regular rentals and 12.4 years for the city, and new-builds 5.8 years; the official site is bostad.stockholm.se (bostadsformedlingen.se is a parked domain). Lag (2012:978) on letting your own home was reported repealed and replaced by the Privatuthyrningslag (2026:772), with 1 July 2026 given as the date, so verify before you sublet. We give no rent ranges because we found no official source.[^27]
What this means for a job seeker: ask which agreement covers the job, which group and experience step you are placed in, and whether pay is above the floor. Entry pay in the agreements above is roughly SEK 26,600 to 29,200 a month. If you need a work permit, compare the offer with SEK 34,470 before you apply, because the permit floor is well above retail and hospitality minimums.
EU/EEA and non-EU applicants: work and residence permits

EU/EEA and Nordic citizens may work without a permit. Skatteverket registers you as resident (personnummer) if you plan to stay at least one year; shorter stays receive a samordningsnummer. An EU/EEA worker must show the intention to stay for at least a year.[^28]
Non-EU nationals need a permit granted before entry, and the rules changed on 1 June 2026:[^29]
- Work permit. The employer must advertise in Sweden and the EU/EEA/Switzerland for at least 10 days, for example on Platsbanken and EURES, before signing. Pay must be at least 90% of the SCB median (SEK 34,470) and at least agreement level. The fee is SEK 2,200 for the employee, SEK 1,500 for an adult family member and SEK 750 for a child; Japanese citizens pay no application fee. A permit lasts up to two years per grant.[^29]
- Changing jobs. If you have held the permit for less than two years you must apply for a new permit to change employer; after two years only a change of occupation needs one.[^29]
- Processing. Migrationsverket's service promise is a decision within 30 days for complete applications of highly qualified applicants, and 75% of complete applications for other employees within four months (nine months if incomplete). The legal target is four months.[^29][^30]
- EU Blue Card. At least SEK 53,625 gross a month (1.25 times the average gross salary), a degree of at least 180 higher education credits or five years of experience, and a job of at least six months. Validity is up to four years per grant since 1 June 2026. The fee is SEK 2,000; Japanese nationals pay no fee.[^31]
- Job-seeker permit for the highly qualified. A master's or doctoral level degree, up to nine months, funds of at least SEK 13,000 a month, full health insurance and a fee of SEK 2,200; you apply from outside Sweden.[^32]
- Seasonal work. Permits can run nine months in any twelve from 1 June 2026, and pay must meet at least the collective-agreement minimum. Forest berry-picking and personal assistants cannot get permits from 1 June 2026.[^29]
- Health insurance. Comprehensive health insurance is required for stays up to one year from 1 June 2026.[^29]
- Spårbyte. The spårbyte route was abolished on 1 April 2025.[^29]
- Citizenship. From 6 June 2026 the general residence requirement is eight years, with Swedish language and civics knowledge, an income test and stricter conduct rules.[^33]
Employer duties. For third-country nationals, Utlänningsförordningen (2006:97) 7 kap. 1 b § (from 1 January 2025) requires the employer to notify Skatteverket by the end of the third month after the month employment began, using form SKV 1160. An employer who hires someone without the right to stay pays a särskild avgift of two times the prisbasbelopp (four times if longer than three months) unless it checked, kept a copy and notified (Utlänningslagen 20 kap. 12 §).[^34] Since 1 June 2026 there are new offences of exploiting foreign labour and of trafficking in work permits (Utlänningslagen 20 kap. 10 and 10 a §§), and Migrationsverket can refuse permits for employer deficiencies.[^35]
Politics. The general election was held on 13 September 2026. Preliminary results gave the opposition 176 seats against 173 for the Tidö parties, and as of 20 October the Speaker was still sounding out parties, so no new government had been formed, according to riksdagen.se and press reports. Rules can change, so check Migrationsverket before you act.[^36]
Entry rules. Citizens of visa-exempt countries, including Japan, may stay 90 days in any 180 in the Schengen area. The permit must normally be granted before entry (Utlänningslagen 6 kap. 4 §); the exception applies to shortage occupations after a visit to an employer, within the 90 visa-free days and where the need is urgent. The EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, according to press reports. ETIAS was not yet in operation on 21 October 2026; the fee will be EUR 20 and the date will be announced several months ahead.[^37]
Japanese nationals. The Japan-Sweden working holiday scheme has operated since 2020 (the agreement was signed on 26 August 2019). It is open at ages 18 to 30, gives a one-year visa free of charge, allows no dependents, and MOFA lists no annual quota.[^38] The Japan-Sweden social security agreement is covered in the social security section. MOFA counted 4,776 Japanese residents in Sweden in October 2024.[^38]

| First-time work permits for employees, 2025 | 11,104 (22,965 including family) | Migrationsverket[^30] |
| First-time work permits for employees, January to September 2026 | 9,837 (19,362 including family) | Migrationsverket[^30] |

| Top occupation groups, 2025 | IT architects and developers 2,182; engineers and technicians 1,147; civil engineers 1,068 | Migrationsverket[^30] |
| Foreign-born residents, 31 December 2025 | 2,210,638 (20.8%) | SCB[^5] |
| Japanese residents, October 2024 | 4,776 | MOFA[^38] |
Japan is not among the 20 largest nationalities for first-time work permits.
What this means for a job seeker: an EU/EEA citizen can start at once and register. A non-EU applicant needs a job offer at SEK 34,470 or more (SEK 53,625 for the Blue Card) and should not resign or travel until the permit is granted. Fewer permits were granted in 2025 than in 2024, so competition for employer sponsorship is high; IT and engineering are the largest occupation groups.
Labour law: hours, leave, notice and dismissal
We read the law texts on riksdagen.se. Check each section once before relying on it, and note that collective agreements often add to or vary these rules.[^39]
| Topic | Rule | Law |
|---|---|---|
| Normal working time | 40 hours a week (or 40 on average over at most 4 weeks) | 5 § Arbetstidslagen (1982:673) |
| Overtime limits | General overtime at most 48 hours in 4 weeks or 50 in a month, and 200 hours a year; extra overtime a further 150 hours a year | 8 and 8 a §§ Arbetstidslagen |
| Daily and weekly rest | 11 hours daily rest; 36 hours weekly rest | 13 and 14 §§ Arbetstidslagen |
| Overtime pay | No rates in the Act; collective agreements decide | Arbetstidslagen |
| Annual leave | 25 days; at least four weeks in June to August unless agreed otherwise | 4 and 12 §§ Semesterlagen (1977:480) |
| Holiday pay | Monthly salary plus a 0.43% supplement per day, or 12% of earnings in the earning year | 16 a and 16 b §§ Semesterlagen |
| Sick pay from the employer | 80% for days 1 to 14, less a karensavdrag of 20% of average weekly sick pay (at most 10 times in 12 months); Försäkringskassan pays from day 15 | 6 and 7 §§ Sjuklönelagen (1991:1047) |
| Probation | Six months | 6 § LAS (1982:80) |
| Written information | Key terms in writing no later than the 7th calendar day after the start | 6 c § LAS |
| Discrimination and work environment | Protection under two separate Acts | Diskrimineringslagen (2008:567); Arbetsmiljölagen (1977:1160) |
The maximum sick pay (sjukpenning) is SEK 1,259 a day (about USD 127) on an income base capped at SEK 592,000 (10 prisbasbelopp).[^40]
What this means for a job seeker: expect a 40-hour week and 25 days of paid leave. Check the agreement for overtime pay and for how the six-month probation is used.
Notice, dismissal and the 2022 LAS reform
The employment protection Act (LAS) requires "sakliga skäl" (objective grounds), meaning redundancy or personal reasons, and an employer must offer other work if that is reasonable (7 §). The text we read includes amendments up to SFS 2022:836, the 2022 reform. Minimum notice is one month. An employee with at least 2 years of employment has a right to 2 months of notice, 3 months at 4 years, 4 months at 6 years, 5 months at 8 years and 6 months at 10 years (11 §). In a redundancy, an employer may exempt up to three employees of special importance from the seniority order (22 §).[^39]
A fixed-term "särskild visstidsanställning" (SÄVA) turns into a permanent job after more than 12 months within a five-year period (5 a §), or after more than 12 months in a row of combined SÄVA, cover and seasonal work.[^39] We did not read the Act's rules on every kind of fixed-term contract, and we did not verify other grounds of protection, so ask your union about a dispute.
Public holidays in 2026
Lag (1989:253) om allmänna helgdagar lists the public holidays (1 and 2 §§). In 2026 they fall on:[^39]
| Holiday | Date in 2026 |
|---|---|
| New Year's Day | Thursday 1 January |
| Epiphany | Tuesday 6 January |
| Good Friday | Friday 3 April |
| Easter Sunday | Sunday 5 April |
| Easter Monday | Monday 6 April |
| Labour Day | Friday 1 May |
| Ascension Day | Thursday 14 May |
| Whit Sunday | Sunday 24 May |
| National Day | Saturday 6 June |
| Midsummer Day | Saturday 20 June |
| All Saints' Day | Saturday 31 October |
| Christmas Day | Friday 25 December |
| Boxing Day (Annandag jul) | Saturday 26 December |
Four holidays fall on Saturdays (6 June, 20 June, 31 October and 26 December) and two on Sundays (5 April and 24 May), so no weekday off comes with them; seven fall on weekdays. By custom, not by law, many workplaces also close or shorten the day on Easter Eve (4 April), Midsummer Eve (Friday 19 June), Christmas Eve (Thursday 24 December) and New Year's Eve (Thursday 31 December); check your agreement.[^39]
Social security: what is deducted and what you get

In 2026 employers pay contributions (arbetsgivaravgifter) of 31.42% on top of gross pay:[^41]
| Component | Rate |
|---|---|
| Old-age pension | 10.21% |
| Sickness insurance | 3.55% |
| Parental insurance | 2.00% |
| Survivors' pension | 0.30% |
| Labour market | 2.64% |
| Work injury | 0.10% |
| General payroll fee | 12.62% |
| Total | 31.42% |
For people born in 2003 to 2007 (ages 19 to 23), a reduction applies from 1 April 2026 to 30 September 2027: 20.81% on pay up to SEK 25,000 a month (about USD 2,520), and the full 31.42% above that. Employees aged 67 or more at the start of the year cost the employer only the 10.21% pension component.[^41]
- Your pension fee. The employee pays a 7% general pension fee on income, at most SEK 47,100 (about USD 4,748), and receives a full tax credit for it, so it does not lower your net pay in the usual case. Pension-qualifying income is capped at SEK 673,038. The prisbasbelopp is SEK 59,200 and the inkomstbasbelopp SEK 83,400.[^42]
- Pension age. The guideline age for 2026 is 67 and pensions can be drawn from age 64, according to Pensionsmyndigheten material (reported). Check Pensionsmyndigheten on pensions earned abroad.[^42]
- Unemployment insurance. The a-kassa is voluntary. Since 1 October 2025 you need an income of at least SEK 120,000 over 12 months, with at least 4 months of at least SEK 11,000. Benefit is 80% of previous income for days 1 to 100, 70% for days 101 to 200, 65% from day 201 and 60% from day 301, on income up to SEK 34,000 a month (so at most SEK 27,200 a month, about USD 2,742, in the first 100 days). Membership of less than 12 months gives lower rates. We found no verified daily maximum.[^43]
- Sickness. Your employer pays sick pay for days 1 to 14 (see the labour law table); after that Försäkringskassan pays sjukpenning at 80%.[^40]
- Parental benefit. 480 days: 390 days at the sickness-benefit level and 90 days at SEK 180 a day, with 90 days reserved for each parent. Twins get 660 days. A parent can transfer 45 days to anyone, but reserved days cannot be transferred.[^40]
- Child benefit. Barnbidrag is SEK 1,250 per child per month, with a multi-child supplement of SEK 150 for two children, SEK 730 for three and SEK 1,740 for four, per family per month.[^40]
- Japan agreement. The Japan-Sweden social security agreement entered into force on 1 June 2022, and posted-worker exemption certificates are described on the Japan Pension Service site.[^44]
What this means for a job seeker: the headline 31.42% is paid by your employer, not you, so compare salaries on gross pay. Keep your insurance records if you move between Japan and Sweden, because the agreement and EU rules allow periods to count together. Join an a-kassa early, because the income test looks back 12 months.
Taxes on your salary
Sweden has a local income tax (kommunalskatt) that is comparable to Japan's resident tax (jūminzei) in that the rate is set locally. The average rate in 2026 is 32.38% (32.41% in 2025), ranging from 28.93% in Österåker to 35.65% in Dorotea. We did not verify the Stockholm city rate.[^42]
- State tax. 20% is added on taxable income above SEK 643,000 a year (about USD 64,819). That figure is taxable income after the basic allowance (grundavdrag), not gross pay. The gross break-even (brytpunkt) is SEK 660,400 a year for people under 66, about SEK 55,033 a month.[^42]
- Basic allowance. For people under 66 the grundavdrag is SEK 17,400 at the lowest, SEK 25,100 at low income and at most SEK 45,600.[^42]
- Jobbskatteavdrag. The in-work tax credit was increased from 1 January 2026 by SEK 17.36 billion; the government says an average earner gets about SEK 400 a month less tax than in 2025.[^45]
- Funeral and church fees. Non-members of the Church of Sweden pay a funeral fee of 0.292% (Stockholm 0.07%), and the church fee applies only to members.[^42]
- Expert tax (expertskatt). Qualifying foreign experts can have 25% of pay exempt for up to seven years. The condition is presumed met if monthly pay exceeds 1.5 times the prisbasbelopp, SEK 88,800 (about USD 8,952) in 2026, the person was not resident for the five previous calendar years, the employer is in Sweden, and the Forskarskattenämnden decides (Inkomstskattelagen 11 kap. 22 to 23 a §§).[^46]
- SINK. Non-resident employees staying less than six months pay a flat 22.5% on income received after 31 December 2025, falling to 20% from 1 January 2027.[^46]
- VAT. The standard rate is 25% and 12% applies to restaurant and hotel services. A 6% rate covers passenger transport, books and newspapers. From 1 April 2026 to 31 December 2027, food is also taxed at 6%.[^47]
What this means for a job seeker: work out net pay with your municipality's rate, not the national average, and remember that the state tax only starts at about SEK 55,000 a month. Check Skatteverket's tax tables for your situation and ask whether you qualify for expert tax or SINK before you sign.
Language and what Swedish employers expect in a CV
- Language. Swedish is needed for most jobs. English works in technology and international firms. The right to Swedish for Immigrants (SFI) is limited to three years from first admission from 1 January 2026, so start early.[^48]
- Format. Arbetsförmedlingen says that 1 to 2 pages is sufficient, that a personal letter should be at most one A4 page, and that its templates exist with and without a photo. Send a CV (CV) with a personal letter (personligt brev), tailored to the advert, and contact referees before you list them. We found no primary source for a birth-date convention.[^49]
- Degrees. UHR gives a free digital assessment of foreign upper-secondary, post-secondary vocational (at least one year) and higher education. It does not cover regulated professions.[^50]
- Regulated professions. Socialstyrelsen handles legitimation for health professionals. The non-EU/EEA route includes an education assessment, a Swedish-language knowledge test, a law course, clinical training and an application; language can be shown with, for example, Svenska 3 or SVA 3 or a C1 certificate. Skolverket issues the teacher licence.[^50]
- Registration. Skatteverket registers you (personnummer) if you plan to stay at least a year, and gives a samordningsnummer for shorter stays. Keep your personnummer off the CV and share it only with a verified employer.[^28]
- Guides. See our ATS-friendly CV guide and, as a model for English CVs, the UK CV format guide.

Polisen warned in January 2026 about fake "easy home job" adverts on social media that can involve money laundering. Never pay to get a job and do not use BankID for an employer. Arbetsförmedlingen says impostors exist and that it never asks for account or login details through social media or chat. Migrationsverket warns that a company or agent cannot promise a permit, and that you should pay only Migrationsverket's own fee.[^51]
- An employer who asks you to pay for a job, a permit or a placement is a warning sign (see 6 § Lag 1993:440).
- Check the organisation number at Skatteverket and compare the advert with the employer's own career page.
- An offer that promises a permit, or asks you to move money for someone else, should be dropped.
- A permit can be revoked if the employer does not keep the terms.
A seven-day search routine
- Day 1: pick two sectors and save 20 adverts from Platsbanken and one commercial board.
- Day 2: list repeated job titles, skills and Swedish-language requirements.
- Day 3: build one master CV and a tailored version for the strongest sector, plus a one-page personligt brev.
- Day 4: set alerts, check EURES if you are an EEA citizen, and visit employer career pages.
- Day 5: if you are a non-EU applicant, check the salary floor of SEK 34,470 and whether your credentials need assessment.
- Day 6: send targeted applications.
- Day 7: review replies, drop weak sources and keep the two channels that produced recruiter contact.

FAQ
What are the best job sites in Sweden?
Platsbanken, LinkedIn, Indeed, Ledigajobb, JobbSafari (via its own site), Academic Work and JobTeaser are the main general channels we found, with EURES for EEA applicants and Region Stockholm and Offentliga Jobb for public-sector roles. We found no verified ranking, and Blocket Jobb has closed.[^7][^11]
Does Sweden have a minimum wage?
There is no statutory minimum wage. Collective agreements set minimum pay and cover 88% of employees. From 1 April 2026 retail starts at SEK 26,626 a month at age 18, and hotels and restaurants at SEK 26,580 or 28,425.[^19][^21][^22]
Can I work in Sweden without speaking Swedish?
In some technology and international firms, yes, but most jobs need Swedish. Ask the employer which level it expects.
What is the work-permit salary requirement?
At least 90% of the SCB median at the time of application, which is SEK 34,470 a month since the median rose to SEK 38,300 on 16 June 2026, and at least agreement level. Some exempt occupations use 75%, and an EU Blue Card needs SEK 53,625.[^26][^31]
Can Japanese citizens use the working holiday scheme?
Yes. The scheme has operated since 2020, applicants must be 18 to 30, and the visa lasts one year. Japanese citizens also pay no work-permit application fee.[^29][^38]
How many hours do I work and how is overtime paid?
Normal working time is 40 hours a week. General overtime is capped at 48 hours in four weeks or 50 in a month and 200 hours a year (8 § Arbetstidslagen). Overtime pay comes from collective agreements.[^39]
How much holiday and leave do I get?
25 days of annual leave, with at least four weeks in June to August unless otherwise agreed. Holiday pay is usually your salary plus 0.43% per day, or 12% of earnings under the percentage rule. In 2026 seven public holidays fall on weekdays.[^39]
What notice period and dismissal rules apply?
Minimum notice is one month, rising to 2 to 6 months for the employee's right with 2 to 10 years of service. Dismissal needs objective grounds, and probation lasts at most six months.[^39]
Can I get unemployment insurance?
Yes, if you meet the income test (SEK 120,000 over 12 months) and belong to an a-kassa. Benefit starts at 80% of income up to SEK 34,000 a month for the first 100 days.[^43]
How much income tax will I pay?
The average local tax is 32.38%, and 20% state tax applies on taxable income above SEK 643,000. SINK is 22.5% for short stays and expert tax can exempt 25% of pay for up to seven years.[^42][^46]
