The safest Colombian hoja de vida is a clear, vacancy-specific document of one or two pages, with your latest job first, written in Spanish unless the advert is in English. No Colombian statute we read prescribes a CV template, and none requires or bans a photo. What the law does regulate is what an employer may do with your data and how it may choose: personal data needs your authorisation (Ley 1581 de 2012), credit history may never be used for hiring decisions (Ley 1266 de 2008) and the military card cannot be demanded to give you a job (Ley 1861 de 2017).[^1][^2][^3] The World Bank puts Colombia's 2025 unemployment rate at 8.3% and its international migrant stock at 3,063,518 (2024), so the market is open to foreign candidates but competitive.[^4]
This guide covers the Colombian CV and application, personal data and fair hiring, an annotated fictional hoja de vida, the carta de presentación and documents, foreign degrees, pay and the minimum wage, contracts, the economy, work permits, labour law, social security, taxes and job scams. For where to find vacancies, see our Colombia job-board guide. It is written for Colombians, Venezuelans holding a PPT, Andean Community and other Latin American nationals, Spaniards, other foreigners and Japanese nationals, and it uses Colombian terms such as hoja de vida, carta de presentación, aspiración salarial, cédula de ciudadanía, cédula de extranjería, PPT, SMMLV, auxilio de transporte, prima de servicios, cesantías, EPS, AFP, Colpensiones, ARL, caja de compensación, liquidación and justa causa.
Editorial boundary: This is practical job-search guidance, not legal, immigration or tax advice. We use the law texts published by the Secretaría del Senado and Función Pública, the Ministerio del Trabajo, Migración Colombia and the Cancillería, the DIAN, the DANE and the Banco de la República as our references, and we only list figures we could read in an official or primary source. Items that rest on press reports or one secondary summary are marked "reported" or "likely". Several Colombian government sites could not be opened from our network, so some items rest on compilations of the official text or on summaries of official bulletins. Confirm details with the relevant authority before you sign anything.
We convert Colombian pesos (COP) at the Representative market rate (TRM) certified by the Superintendencia Financiera for 21 October 2026: USD 1 = COP 3,163.76; COP 1,000,000 ≈ USD 316 / JPY 49,560 (at USD 1 = JPY 156.80).[^5] We write "about" because rates move daily.

Colombia CV format at a glance

| Topic | Colombian practice in 2026 | Law or official guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Length | One or two pages, latest job first, usually as a PDF | Market practice; we found no official rule |
| Photo | Optional. Include one only if you are comfortable and the employer asks | No statute requires or bans a CV photo; it is a market choice |
| Personal data (cédula, age, marital status) | Name, city, email, mobile, LinkedIn. Many candidates leave out cédula number, age, marital status and children; the cédula is needed when you are hired | No law forbids writing them, but employers must follow Ley 1581 (data minimisation) and may not discriminate; so this is advice, not a rule[^1] |
| Libreta militar (men) | Not needed to apply. Have your military status defined | Ley 1861 de 2017 art. 42: employers cannot demand the military card to hire you[^3] |
| Work-authorisation line | A short true line for foreigners, for example "PPT valid until 30 May 2031, authorises work" | Res. 5477 de 2022 (visas) and Decreto 216 de 2021 (PPT)[^6][^7] |
| References | Do not list them on the CV; give them when asked | Practice; we found no rule |
| Aspiración salarial | Give it when the form asks, as a monthly COP figure; say whether it is salario básico or includes benefits | Practice; we found no general rule that requires salary in adverts |
| Degree recognition | Name the award as issued; add convalidación only if you hold it | Needed mainly for regulated professions and public posts[^8] |
| File / ATS | Follow the portal; otherwise a readable PDF whose text you can copy | Not an official rule |
| Language | Spanish for Colombian employers; English if the advert is in English | No legal rule |
| Cover letter | Short; two or three paragraphs | Practice; no official rule |
Personal data, photo and fair hiring
Data protection (Ley 1581 de 2012). The statutory data-protection law requires prior and informed authorisation to process your personal data (art. 9) and restricts sensitive data (art. 6); you also have a right to ask for your data to be suppressed (art. 8).[^1] In practice, a recruiter who keeps your CV after a process ends should have your authorisation to do so. We could not reach the data authority (SIC) and found no SIC doctrine on CV retention, so treat that as good practice rather than a quoted rule. No specific rule on AI screening of candidates is in force as of October 2026; several AI bills are in Congress but none has been approved, so the general data-protection law is what applies.
Credit data (Ley 1266 de 2008). Article 10, paragraph 2, as modified by Ley 2157 de 2021, says credit information may never be consulted for employment decisions.[^2] We found no exception for roles that handle money. If a recruiter asks about your credit report or debts, you can point to this rule.
Libreta militar (Ley 1861 de 2017). Military status must be accredited to work in the public sector, the private sector or on service contracts with public bodies, but article 42 says public and private entities may not demand the military card to give you a job. People declared not apt, exempt or over the maximum conscription age have 18 months from hiring to define their situation, with a provisional online certificate. Men from 18 to 50 are expected to define their status (art. 11).[^3] Ley 1780 de 2016 is often cited for this but Ley 1861 now governs.
Anti-discrimination. Ley 1482 de 2011, as amended by Ley 1752 de 2015, makes arbitrary acts against a person because of race, nationality, sex, sexual orientation or disability criminal offences (Código Penal arts. 134A to 134C); art. 134A carries 12 to 36 months in prison and a fine of 10 to 15 SMMLV.[^9] Age and marital status are not named in those laws; the general equality principle in Constitution art. 13 applies. A photo, your age and your marital status on a CV are market practice, not legal requirements. Ley 2466 de 2025 also adds employer prohibitions on discriminating against women and people of diverse gender identities (CST art. 59, numerals 10 to 14).[^10]
Disability. Under Ley 361 de 1997 art. 26, a disability cannot block hiring unless it is clearly shown to be incompatible with the job and impossible to overcome; dismissal because of a disability needs Ministerio del Trabajo authorisation, otherwise the employer owes 180 days' salary.[^11]
Equal pay. Ley 1496 de 2011 requires employers to keep a register of positions by sex, duties and pay (fine up to 150 SMMLV) and lets the Ministerio del Trabajo run random audits. It is not a general duty to audit and it does not require salary ranges in adverts; we found no rule that does.[^12]
Medical and other tests. Resolución 1843 de 2025 of the Ministerio del Trabajo replaced Res. 2346 de 2007. The employer pays the full cost of the entry exam, and pregnancy, HIV and serology tests cannot be required for entry or stay.[^13] The pregnancy-test limit comes from Res. 3941 de 1994 (allowed only for listed high-risk activities), and the HIV-test ban is in Decreto 780 de 2016 art. 2.8.1.3.10 (formerly Decreto 1543 de 1997 art. 21).[^13] No specific statute on polygraph tests or home visits was found; if an employer asks, your consent is needed under Ley 1581.
Criminal and disciplinary records, and minors. Police, Procuraduría and Contraloría certificates are issued online and are widely requested; we could not open the official sites, so this rests on press (likely). For posts with direct and habitual contact with minors, Ley 1918 de 2018 (as changed by Ley 2375 de 2024) requires the employer, with your authorisation, to check the register of sexual-offence disqualifications; the fine for not doing so is 50 to 500 SMMLV.[^14]
Practice versus law. Nothing in the texts we read forbids a photo, a date of birth or a marital status on a CV; they simply must not be used to refuse you. Because that information adds little to your case and can invite bias, the cautious default is to leave it off.
Structure of a Colombian hoja de vida
The sections below are editorial advice and market practice, not a legal template. For a practical layout check, see our ATS-friendly CV guide.
1. Header and headline
Name, a professional email, a mobile number (+57), your city, and a LinkedIn or portfolio link. A full street address is unnecessary before an offer. Under the name, put a headline naming the target role.
2. Perfil profesional (profile)
Three or four lines connecting your evidence to the role. Weak: "Dynamic person looking for new challenges." Stronger: "Sales operations analyst with four years' experience in bilingual customer reporting and weekly Excel dashboards."
3. Experience in reverse chronology
Title, employer, city, dates and two to five bullets. Build each bullet from an action, an object, the context and a result you can verify. Use the advert's keywords only where they truthfully describe your work. Work done by prestación de servicios (invoicing as an independent) is not employment, so label it as freelance or contract work.
4. Education and training
The most relevant award first, with institution, country and year. Do not translate a foreign award into a Colombian title unless convalidación has been granted. Ley 1780 de 2016 art. 18 lets additional degrees offset a lack of experience in the first-job rules, which is useful for early-career candidates.
5. Skills, languages and gaps
State each language with a level you can defend. Explain a long gap in one factual line with dates (study, care, relocation, a project); no medical or family detail is needed.
Public-sector applications
Public posts use the Formato Único de Hoja de Vida (Persona Natural), which is filled in on the SIGEP platform; it is also required from service contractors before signing with a public body. Merit contests for public careers are run by the Comisión Nacional del Servicio Civil (CNSC) through its SIMO platform.[^15] A Función Pública concept (reported, one secondary summary) says only Colombian citizens can enter public careers, so a foreigner with a work visa should not expect to sit a contest.
Annotated fictional Colombian hoja de vida
The sample is entirely fictional: person, employers, contacts and numbers. Replace every item with truthful information.
Laura Gómez Ejemplo, Sales Operations Analyst · Bogotá · [email protected] · +57 300 000 0000
*Annotation: fictional contacts. Use a city location; add your cédula number only if a form asks.*
Perfil: Sales operations analyst with four years' experience preparing weekly pipeline reports, cleaning customer data and improving hand-offs between sales and billing.
*Annotation: align the role label and evidence with the vacancy. Do not add years or languages you cannot prove.*
Experiencia: Sales Operations Analyst, Andina Ejemplo S.A.S. · Bogotá · Mar 2023 to present
- Prepared a weekly pipeline report for 12 account managers in Excel and a BI tool, flagging stalled deals.
- Reduced duplicate customer records from roughly 300 to under 40 through a monthly clean-up routine.
- Documented a shared checklist for the sales-to-billing hand-off.
*Annotation: organisation and figures are fictional. Support real claims with records, work samples or a referee.*
Experiencia: Administrative Assistant, Oficina Ejemplo · Medellín · Jun 2021 to Feb 2023
- Scheduled client appointments, updated records and prepared the monthly invoicing file for the accountant.
*Annotation: one relevant bullet beats a long list of duties.*
Formación: Profesional en Administración de Empresas, Universidad Ejemplo de Antioquia, 2021
*Annotation: the institution is fictional. Keep the official award name.*
Habilidades e idiomas: Excel reporting · data cleaning · customer email · Spanish (native) · English [truthful level]
Work authorisation (for a foreign applicant): "PPT valid until [date], authorises any lawful activity including employment."
*Annotation: one short true line. Do not paste permit, cédula or passport numbers.*
Carta de presentación, references and documents
Cover letter. We found no official guidance on the carta de presentación. In practice it is short, often the body of the email: two or three paragraphs saying why this employer, why this role, and one or two proof points that connect your background to the advert. Do not repeat the CV.
Cédula and work status. Colombians use the cédula de ciudadanía. Foreigners with a visa valid for more than three months must register for a cédula de extranjería within 15 calendar days of entering the country or of the visa being issued; Venezuelans use the PPT, which Decreto 216 de 2021 describes as an identification document that authorises any lawful activity.[^16][^7] Give these numbers only when a form asks, and only at the hiring stage.
Certificates from the previous job. Under CST art. 57 no. 7, at the end of a contract the employer must give you, if you ask, a certificate stating the time of service, the kind of work and the salary. It is on request, not automatic, so ask for it when you leave.[^17]
Entry medical exam. The employer pays the whole cost (Res. 1843 de 2025), and the result sent to the employer is normally a fitness concept (apto, apto con restricciones, no apto).[^13] Do not pay for it yourself.
References. We found no Colombian rule on references. Keep names ready, ask each person first and give them at interview.
Foreign degrees: convalidación and regulated professions
The Ministerio de Educación Nacional (MEN) runs convalidación, the recognition of foreign higher-education degrees. Resolución 10687 de 2019 is the base rule, amended by Res. 14448 de 2022 and Res. 15162 de 2024. The MEN processing routes are reported at 60, 120 and 180 days depending on the route (accredited or high-quality institutions are the fastest). The fee is tied to the UVT each year; the press reports COP 960,539 for an undergraduate degree (about USD 304 / JPY 15,050) and COP 1,091,474 for a postgraduate degree (about USD 345 / JPY 17,100) from 13 February 2026, so confirm the current amount on the MEN platform. Foreign documents need an apostille or legalisation plus an official translation into Spanish.[^8]
Convalidación is not mandatory for private-sector employment. It is usually needed for regulated professions, public posts, public procurement and teaching at public universities. Colombia applies the Hague Apostille Convention under Ley 455 de 1998.[^18] Professional registration is a separate step with the relevant council: for example COPNIA issues the engineering professional card, and health professionals are registered under Ley 1164 de 2007.[^19] Do not write "Colombian equivalent" on a CV before you hold a recognition decision.
Pay: minimum wage, auxilio de transporte, prima and salary components

Salario mínimo (SMMLV). Decreto 1469 of 29 December 2025 fixes the 2026 minimum wage at COP 1,750,905 a month (about USD 553 / JPY 86,780), 23% above 2025. The Consejo de Estado suspended that decree provisionally on 12 February 2026 and a transitional Decreto 0159 of 19 February 2026 kept the same amount; the figure did not change.[^20] The daily rate is about COP 58,364, and the hourly rate about COP 7,959 on a 44-hour week or COP 8,338 on a 42-hour week (our arithmetic).
Auxilio de transporte. Decreto 1470 of 29 December 2025 sets the transport allowance at COP 249,095 a month (about USD 79 / JPY 12,350) for workers who earn up to 2 SMMLV. A worker on the minimum wage therefore receives COP 2,000,000 in total (about USD 632 / JPY 99,120).[^20] Ley 2088 gives workers on occasional home-working the same amount as a connectivity allowance instead; the two are not cumulative.
Salario integral. A salario integral is only valid by written agreement, and the ordinary salary must be at least 10 SMMLV plus a 30% benefit factor, so the minimum is 13 SMMLV = COP 22,761,765 a month (about USD 7,195 / JPY 1,128,100). Vacations are not included in the integral package.[^21]
Prima de servicios. Under CST art. 306 the employee is entitled to a prima equal to 30 days' pay for a full year, paid in the year.[^22] Cesantías and interest. Cesantías are deposited in a fund by 14 February and the 12% annual interest on them is paid by 31 January (reported from a Función Pública answer and press; confirm with your fund). Vacations. 15 working days of paid vacation per year of service (CST art. 186).[^22]
Gross and net. Ask whether a quoted figure is salario básico or includes bonuses. Employee health and pension contributions come out of pay, and the employer adds its own charges on top (see the social security section).
What this means: the SMMLV is a floor, not a market rate. Ask whether a quoted aspiración salarial is monthly, whether it is básico or integral, and whether the auxilio de transporte, prima and cesantías are on top. The 2027 minimum wage was not set at the time of writing; the commission must try to agree by 15 December and the Government must decree by 30 December (press).
Contracts: labour contract, período de prueba and prestación de servicios
Indefinite and fixed-term. The indefinite contract is the rule. Under CST art. 46, as amended by Ley 2466 de 2025, a fixed-term contract must be in writing and lasts at most 4 years (existing contracts count from 25 June 2025); from the fourth renewal it cannot be shorter than one year, it renews automatically unless one side gives 30 days' notice, and otherwise it is treated as indefinite.[^10]
Período de prueba. A probation period of up to 2 months applies (CST art. 78).[^22] Put the probation clause in writing.
Contrato de aprendizaje. Ley 2466 art. 21 turns the apprenticeship contract into a special fixed-term labour contract with a sustaining allowance of 75% of the SMMLV in the first (lectiva) phase and 100% afterwards; university students get at least 1 SMMLV.[^10]
Prestación de servicios. Offers framed as a contract of services (you invoice and receive no employer benefits) are not a labour contract; the prima, cesantías and vacations described in this guide belong to employees. We did not verify case law on reclassification, so take advice before accepting such an offer for a full-time, supervised job. Contractors for public bodies must file the Formato Único de Hoja de Vida before signing.[^15]

*Source: World Bank, World Development Indicators (accessed 26 October 2026).*[^4]
The World Bank also lists unemployment at 8.3% and youth unemployment (ages 15 to 24) at 17.7% for 2025, and an international migrant stock of 3,063,518 for 2024.[^4]
2026 data. The DANE's household survey puts national unemployment at 9.4% in August 2026 (8.6% a year earlier) and 9.1% in the 13 main cities; informality was 54.9% nationally. The IPC consumer price index rose 6.29% over the 12 months to September 2026, after 5.10% over calendar 2025.[^23] These are secondary summaries of the DANE bulletins, which we could not open directly. The World Bank annual averages and the DANE monthly and 12-month figures are different series, so compare like with like.
What this means: with consumer prices rising about 6% a year, a fixed salary loses value over time. Ask when pay is reviewed, and give your aspiración salarial with a date.
Work permits and rules for foreign workers

Visas (Res. 5477 de 2022). The Visa M Trabajador (art. 74) lasts up to 3 years and allows work only for the post, entity and profession it was granted for; the employer must tell the Cancillería about changes (art. 82). The Visa M Migrante Mercosur (art. 71) lasts 2 years, is granted once and carries an open work permit; the Visa M Migrante Andino (art. 72) lasts up to 2 years, is granted once and carries an open work permit, on the basis of the Andean migration statute (CAN Decision 878 of 2021). Visa R (resident) can follow: 5 years of M Trabajador, or 2 years of Mercosur or Andino M (art. 90). When a visa ends you have 30 calendar days to leave or apply for a new one (art. 111). Holders of an open work visa must tell Migración Colombia of a change of job within 15 days (art. 119). The rules do not say whether a visitor can switch to a work visa without leaving; we did not confirm it, so ask the Cancillería before you plan around it.[^6]
Digital nomads. The Visa V for digital nomads (art. 46) lasts up to 2 years, needs proof of income of 3 SMMLV over 3 months and health insurance, and does not allow work for an employer or client domiciled in Colombia.[^6]
Venezuelans: PPT and ETPV. Under Decreto 216 de 2021 the Temporary Protection Status for Venezuelan Migrants lasts 10 years. The PPT is valid until the last day of the Estatuto and is not extendable unless the Government decides, which is 30 May 2031 according to Migración Colombia acts. It is an identification document and authorises any lawful activity, including a labour contract (art. 11). Issuing any visa to a Venezuelan cancels the PPT (art. 14), and ETPV holders can request a Visa R after 5 years of PEP or PPT (Res. 5477 art. 91). Before the Estatuto ends, a Venezuelan who wants to stay must obtain a visa.[^7] The PEP-Tutor remains for guardians of Venezuelan minors; the PPT is the main document.
Employer duties: SIRE. The employer must report the start and the end of every foreign worker's employment, PPT holders included, in Migración Colombia's SIRE system within 15 calendar days. The fine runs from 105.25 to 2,631.30 UVT (Res. 3770 de 2021), about COP 5.5 million to 137.8 million (about USD 1,740 to 43,560).[^24] If you are a foreign worker, check that your employer registers you.
Japanese nationals
Japan is on the list of nationalities exempt from a visa for short stays (Res. 5488 de 2022, art. 3), only for activities that generate no pay in Colombia; the usual stay is up to 90 days and extensions are possible, so check with Migración Colombia.[^25] You cannot work on that status. A Japanese worker needs a work visa, such as the M Trabajador, tied to a post. About 1,232 Japanese were registered as residents in Colombia in October 2025 (reported; Ministry of Foreign Affairs survey as quoted by JETRO).[^26] The Japan–Colombia social security and tax treaty position is covered in the sections below.
Foreign workers in numbers
Migración Colombia counted 2,841,389 Venezuelans in the country (dashboard cut of February 2026).[^27] The World Bank's migrant-stock figure for 2024 (3,063,518) is a different measure that covers all foreign-born residents.[^4] We found no verified count of foreigners in formal jobs, so we do not quote one.
Labour law: hours, leave, notice and dismissal
The figures below are legal standards from the Código Sustantivo del Trabajo (CST) as amended by Ley 2101 de 2021 and Ley 2466 de 2025; your contract or a collective agreement may be better.[^10][^28]
| Topic | Rule |

| Weekly hours (Ley 2101) | 47 h from 15 July 2023, 46 h from 2024, 44 h from 15 July 2025 and 42 h from 15 July 2026; employers may adopt 42 h earlier[^28] |
| Daily hours (CST art. 161) | 8 hours a day; flexible distribution allowed, from 4 to 9 hours a day without overtime if the weekly average does not exceed 42 hours[^10] |
| Night work | From 19:00 to 06:00 since 25 December 2025; surcharge 35% (CST art. 168)[^10] |
| Overtime | At most 2 hours a day and 12 a week; no Ministerio del Trabajo permit needed, but the employer keeps a register. Surcharges 25% by day and 75% by night[^10] |
| Sunday and holiday work | Surcharge 80% from 1 July 2025, 90% from 1 July 2026 and 100% from 1 July 2027 (CST art. 179); the rest day may be agreed on another day[^10] |

| Prima de servicios | 30 days' pay per year (CST art. 306)[^22] |
| Maternity leave | 18 weeks, plus 2 for a multiple birth (Ley 1822 de 2017)[^29] |
| Paternity leave | 2 weeks (Ley 2114 de 2021); Ley 2466 did not extend it[^29] |
| Período de prueba | Up to 2 months (CST art. 78)[^22] |
| Indemnity for dismissal without just cause (art. 64) | Indefinite contract: 30 days for the first year plus 20 days per further year if you earn under 10 SMMLV; 20 days plus 15 days per further year if you earn 10 SMMLV or more. Fixed-term contract: the pay for the remaining term[^22] |
| Dismissal for justa causa | No indemnity if the cause is proven. Disciplinary sanctions, and dismissals for misconduct, must follow due process (hearing the worker); check your reglamento interno. CST art. 115, as rewritten by Ley 2466 art. 7, requires written opening, evidence, at least 5 days to answer, a reasoned decision and an appeal, and only a hearing for firms with fewer than 10 workers[^10] |
| Reinforced protection | A worker with a disability cannot be dismissed because of it without Ministerio del Trabajo authorisation (Ley 361 art. 26)[^11] |
| Late payment (art. 65) | One day's salary for each day of delay, up to 24 months, then interest (reported; wage above 1 SMMLV) |
| Prescription | 3 years from when the obligation is due (CST art. 488, re-enacted by Ley 2466 art. 62)[^10] |
Workplace harassment. Ley 2365 de 2024 requires employers to publish, every six months, the number of sexual-harassment complaints handled and the sanctions, and to report them to the SIVIGE system.[^30]
2026 public holidays
Colombia has 18 national holidays in 2026. Easter Sunday is 5 April; under Ley 51 de 1983 several holidays move to a Monday, and the fixed ones stay on their date.[^31]

The contribution base is capped at 25 SMMLV (COP 43,772,625, about USD 13,836 / JPY 2,169,430). On the minimum wage, 4% is COP 70,036 (about USD 22), 8.5% is COP 148,827 (about USD 47) and 12% is COP 210,109 (about USD 66). Under Estatuto Tributario art. 114-1, the employer is exonerated from the 8.5% health contribution, SENA and ICBF for workers earning under 10 SMMLV (COP 17,509,050, about USD 5,534), if it is a legal entity that files income tax or a natural-person employer with two or more workers; pension, ARL and the caja stay.[^32]
Pension reform (Ley 2381 de 2024). The Corte Constitucional largely upheld the reform in sentence C-264 de 2026 of 25 August 2026, after a procedural review; nine provisions went back to the Cámara. The approved provisions take effect from 1 April 2027, and until then Ley 100 applies.[^33] Retirement ages remain 62 for men and 57 for women. Men need 1,300 weeks; women's required weeks are 1,250 in 2026 and fall by 25 a year to 1,000 in 2036 (sentence C-197 de 2023).[^33]
FOSFEC and unemployment. Colombia has no classic unemployment insurance. Under Ley 1636 de 2013 as amended by Ley 2225 de 2022, the FOSFEC pays health and pension contributions on 1 SMMLV for up to 6 months, and for members of a caja in categories A and B a cash benefit based on 1.5 SMMLV paid over 4 months (40%, 30%, 20% and 10%), subject to fund availability. You need at least one year of caja contributions in the last three years (two years for independientes), and the benefit is incompatible with paid work or a pension. The text sets no nationality condition, so foreigners with legal work status who were caja members appear eligible; confirm with your caja.[^34]
Incapacidad (sick leave). For an illness certified as incapacidad, the employer pays 66.67% of salary for days 1 and 2, the EPS pays 66.67% for days 3 to 90 and 50% for days 91 to 180; the floor is the prorated SMMLV. This rests on professional sources because the health ministry's site could not be opened.[^35]
Japan–Colombia social security. Colombia is not among the countries with which Japan has a social security agreement in force, so a Japanese worker in Colombia can owe contributions in both countries. Ask your employer and the Japan Pension Service about any exemption before you go.[^36]
Taxes on employees
Income tax table (Estatuto Tributario art. 241). The table is unchanged for 2026. The UVT for 2026 is COP 52,374 (DIAN Res. 000238 of 15 December 2025), about USD 17 / JPY 2,600.[^37][^38] Tax equals (annual taxable income in UVT minus the lower bound) × rate + the added UVT.
| Annual taxable income (UVT) | COP at UVT 52,374 | Marginal rate | Added UVT |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 1,090 | up to 57,087,660 | 0% | 0 |
| 1,090 to 1,700 | up to 89,035,800 | 19% | 0 |
| 1,700 to 4,100 | up to 214,733,400 | 28% | 116 |
| 4,100 to 8,670 | up to 454,082,580 | 33% | 788 |
| 8,670 to 18,970 | up to 993,534,780 | 35% | 2,296 |
| 18,970 to 31,000 | up to 1,623,594,000 | 37% | 5,901 |
| Above 31,000 | above 1,623,594,000 | 39% | 10,352 |
Exempt labour income. Article 206 no. 10 exempts 25% of labour income (after other deductions and exempt items), capped at 790 UVT a year (COP 41,375,460, about USD 13,078). Together, deductions and exempt income are capped at 40% of net income and 1,340 UVT a year (COP 70,181,160, about USD 22,183) under art. 336, plus 72 UVT per dependant for up to four dependants. Cesantías and their interest are fully exempt if the 6-month average income is up to 350 UVT, with partial bands up to 650 UVT.[^37]
Residents and non-residents. A person is generally a tax resident after 183 days in 365 (likely; check with the DIAN). Non-resident individuals pay 35% on Colombian-source taxable income (art. 247).[^37] We did not verify how withholding on a non-resident's salary is applied, so ask your payroll team.
Tax reform. No tax reform passed in 2025 or 2026: the 2025 ley de financiamiento sank, and the emergency Decreto Legislativo 1474 de 2025 was struck down by the Corte Constitucional (sentences C-075 and C-079 de 2026). A new fiscal bill was reported as due to be filed in November 2026, so the rates above could change.[^39]
No local income tax on wages. Colombia has no departmental or municipal income tax on employees, unlike Japan's resident tax (住民税, juminzei) (likely). The industry and commerce tax (ICA) falls on business activity, including independientes, not on salary.
GMF and IVA. The financial-transactions tax (GMF, "4x1000") has a monthly exemption of 350 UVT (COP 18,330,900, about USD 5,794 / JPY 908,500) on one account.[^37] IVA of 19% is a consumption tax, not a tax on salary (likely).
Japan–Colombia tax treaty. The treaty was signed in Tokyo on 19 December 2018, approved by Ley 2095 de 2021, held constitutional by the Corte Constitucional in sentence C-187 de 2022, entered into force on 4 September 2022 and applies from 1 January 2023.[^36] Check the DIAN and Japan's National Tax Agency about relief before you assume it applies to your income.
Where to find jobs, recruitment agencies and job scams
| Channel | Use |
|---|---|
| Servicio Público de Empleo | Employers must report vacancies to it (Ley 1636 de 2013 art. 31, as modified by Ley 2225 de 2022), and the authorised prestadores must give basic placement services to job seekers free of charge (Decreto 1072 de 2015 arts. 2.2.6.1.2.20 and 2.2.6.1.2.26)[^18] |
| Job boards | elempleo and Magneto. Computrabajo, LinkedIn and Indeed are also widely used (names only; market practice, not an official ranking)[^40] |
| Recruitment agencies | Michael Page, Adecco and ManpowerGroup; Hays, Randstad and Robert Walters are also active (names only)[^40] |
| Public competitions | Merit contests of the CNSC through SIMO; public posts also use the Formato Único de Hoja de Vida[^15] |
| Professional registration and migration | COPNIA for engineers; Migración Colombia for visas, the PPT and the cédula de extranjería |
Private job boards are legal. Agencies may charge for authorised specialised services, but basic placement services for job seekers must be free, and charging for a free service is prohibited.[^18]
Scams. Decreto 1072 de 2015 (art. 2.2.6.1.2.26 no. 5) forbids false or misleading job offers by authorised prestadores, and the employer pays the entry medical exam in full, so a request for you to pay for an exam, a "training kit" or a placement is a red flag.[^18][^13] Check the company's name and NIT (the company registration number), be wary of offers that move to a messaging app at once or ask for your bank login, and never send photos of documents to an unverified recruiter. The Servicio Público de Empleo has advised victims to report to the Fiscalía (reported; we could not open the official reporting pages). Never pay anyone for a job or for placement.
Final checks before you apply

- [ ] The work-authorisation line is short and true, and the permit I hold allows work (PPT, open-work visa, or a visa tied to this employer).
- [ ] I know the pay basis: básico or integral, auxilio de transporte, prima and cesantías.
- [ ] I checked convalidación for my degree and any professional council registration.
- [ ] If the offer is prestación de servicios, I understand it is not a labour contract.

FAQ
What is the standard Colombian CV format?
There is no statutory template. A practical default is a clear, vacancy-specific hoja de vida of one or two pages, latest job first, in the language of the advert, as a PDF.
Should a Colombian CV include a photo?
No statute we found requires or bans one. The law targets discrimination in selection, so many applicants leave the photo off. Follow the vacancy and your own preference.[^9]
Can an employer demand my libreta militar?
No. Ley 1861 de 2017 art. 42 says public and private entities may not demand the military card to give you a job, although men must still have their military status defined.[^3]
Can an employer check my credit history?
No. Ley 1266 de 2008 art. 10 par. 2 says credit information may never be consulted for employment decisions.[^2]
What is the minimum wage in Colombia in 2026?
COP 1,750,905 a month (about USD 553 / JPY 86,780) from 1 January 2026, plus an auxilio de transporte of COP 249,095 for workers earning up to 2 SMMLV.[^20]
How long is the working week now?
42 hours from 15 July 2026 under Ley 2101 de 2021. Night work starts at 19:00 and the Sunday and holiday surcharge is 90% from 1 July 2026.[^28][^10]
Can a Venezuelan work with a PPT?
Yes. Decreto 216 de 2021 describes the PPT as an identification document that authorises any lawful activity, including employment. It is valid until 30 May 2031 and is not extendable unless the Government decides.[^7]
Can a Japanese citizen work in Colombia on the visa-free entry?
No. The visa exemption is for short stays and activities that generate no pay in Colombia. A work visa such as the M Trabajador is needed.[^25][^6]
How much severance do I get if I am dismissed without just cause?
Under CST art. 64, with an indefinite contract and pay under 10 SMMLV, the indemnity is 30 days for the first year plus 20 days per further year; with a fixed-term contract it is the pay for the remaining term.[^22]
Is there unemployment insurance in Colombia?
Not in the classic sense. The FOSFEC pays health and pension contributions for up to 6 months and, for some caja members, a cash benefit over 4 months.[^34]
